I want to keep my children in touch with their rich Indian
culture, which is not always easy while living in the US.
Luckily, my daughter had an interest in dancing from a young
age, and I decided to enroll her in Kathak classes. However
we were new to the area and I did not know of any good teachers
who taught on the weekends.
I asked some friends for some referrals, but it was a lot of
effort to contact them and get the numbers. In the meantime,
someone suggested we try a site called "CopperPages.com" and lo
and behold, there was a long list of teachers in our area,
including Kathak, Odissi, and even Folk dance teachers! We
explored many of these options, and I was surprised to learn
that there was also a local branch of SPICMACAY, for the
promotion of Indian arts.
Not only did we find a great teacher for my daughter, my whole
family also began attending SPICMACAY events and we met a lot of
new friends through both these activities. I also found a Tabla
teacher for my son, a teacher who was young and born in the US
and taught Table to Americans at a local university. Some
of my friends did not know about this teacher, and were
surprised to learn about him as well, even though they had lived
in the area for many years. Many of the boys in our community
enjoyed learning from this young teacher because he was able
to understand them and relate to their age group. We are glad
that he listed himself on CopperPages and we were able to find
him in this way.
I think it is a valuable service that is provided to the Indian
community and hope that it continues to serve us for many years
to come.
Sincerely,
